The Lightspeed Systems Foundation

Mission Statement

Lightspeed Systems Foundation seeks to further the company’s goal of helping schools do amazing things. The Lightspeed Foundation awards competitive grants and other charitable contributions that impact the learning community. The Lightspeed Foundation also empowers Lightspeed Systems employees to participate in philanthropic opportunities and to give back to the charitable causes that are important to them.

Three types of giving are supported:

1. Amazing Grants

Amazing Grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded to existing K-12 schools that are exempt from federal taxation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and are operated exclusively for exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3). Amazing Grants may also be awarded to international organizations operating with the same purpose.
Amazing Grants may be used to support transformation initiatives and the planning, technical assistance, and implementation of bold, innovated approaches that deliver results in one or more of the following categories:

  • Inspired Teachers
  • Engaged Students
  • Confident IT Teams
  • Involved Parents

Submission, review, award and reporting will involve employees of Lightspeed Systems, with assistance provided by Kern Community Foundation. Final grant report to address measurable outcomes will be due one year from the grant award date.

Grant Requirements and Restrictions

2013 Awards
Coast Unified School District is developing a county-wide program based on the wildly popular world-building game Minecraft and the curriculum built around it with Minecraft in Education. My Big Campus will be used for collaboration and project sharing.

Students across grade levels and in several classrooms across the country are collectively studying and sharing their local economies and commerce thanks to two William B. Bimat Elementary School teachers heading up the research projects. In addition to online collaboration, students will engage through webcasts with local industry leaders, student-created classroom commerce systems, and digital presentations.

Field work projects come alive for students at Frank Elementary School who capture their experiences on mobile devices, bring their learning back to the classroom, and turn the experience into printed field workbooks and digital portfolios.

eBooks are at the heart of Stocker Elementary School’s project where they are committed to supporting personalized learning and improving reading abilities. Students will lead discussions across classrooms, grade levels, and book clubs inside My Big Campus. They’ll also create multimedia presentations and reflections for peer review.

Teacher stipends are fueling the development and sharing of curriculum within My Big Campus at Batesville Community School Corporation. Funds are pulling together collaboration time with teachers and instructional technology specialists to enhance teaching and learning.

Similarly, with the goals of developing effective student collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and advanced written and oral communication, North Adams Community Schools will use stipends to support teachers’ efforts in developing digital curriculum in all core subject areas.

Amazing Employee Giving Cards allow our employees to make a difference by donating to the charities they care about. We encourage all our employees to involve themselves in the work of their favorite charities.
