After 23 years in education, I know school safety isn\u2019t optional, it\u2019s essential, and it belongs to all of us. Our collective responsibility is to protect every student, every day.<\/p>\n\n<p>I had the honor of hosting an insightful conversation with three amazing leaders:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>James Caldwell,<\/strong> Safe Schools Coordinator, Frisco ISD<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Michael Fink,<\/strong> Director of Instructional Technology, Freeport Public Schools<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Michael Giardina,<\/strong> IT Coordinator, Baldwin County Public Schools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>To make this Student Safety in Action recap even more useful, I\u2019ve organized it around the very questions I asked during our discussion. Let\u2019s dive into your most pressing concerns, and the wisdom our panelists shared.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u27a1 If you\u2019d like, you can\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/resources\/webinars\/student-safety-in-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">watch the Student Safety in Action webinar\u202fon-demand now.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-does-student-safety-intelligence-matter\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Does Student Safety Intelligence Matter?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Opening the session with some sobering data:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/products\/lightspeed-alert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lightspeed Alert\u2122<\/a> flagged over <strong>1.7 million<\/strong> student safety signals last year; after human review, <strong>82,000 were high risk<\/strong>, and nearly <strong>4,000 were imminent<\/strong>\u2014meaning a student in serious crisis was identified <strong><em>every four minutes.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/products\/lightspeed-stopit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lightspeed StopIt\u2122<\/a>, an anonymous reporting system, surfaced <strong>66,000+ reports<\/strong>, with <strong>4,800 imminent cases<\/strong> that may have otherwise gone unheard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>These numbers mirror national trends:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nearly 1 in 5 high school students considered suicide last year<\/li>\n\n<li>Students who are bullied are 9x more likely to contemplate suicide<\/li>\n\n<li>32% percent of teens actively fear a school shooting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Traditional student safety tools aren\u2019t designed to detect intent or emotional risk. Intent doesn\u2019t start with a weapon\u2014it starts with a journal entry, a late-night Google search, or a tip from a peer. If it\u2019s predictable, it\u2019s preventable.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-do-any-of-you-find-this-data-surprising\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do any of you find this data surprising?<\/h3>\n\n<p>When I shared that Lightspeed Alert flagged over 1.7 million student safety signals last year (with a student in crisis identified every four minutes) the panelists were unanimous: the need is real and growing.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Fink noted,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cThat tracks for me, as far as what I&#8217;ve seen at Freeport. There&#8217;s a lot of information we get off the system, and a lot that&#8217;s actionable for us.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Giardina added,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cWe\u2019ve used Lightspeed for 5 or 6 years\u2026 It goes up, it further goes up every year.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>James Caldwell summed it up well:<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhen kids feel comfortable around the adults in the building, they&#8217;re more likely to report. I liked your quote, Erika, \u2018if it\u2019s predictable, it\u2019s preventable.\u2019 I wrote that down.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-does-having-expert-triage-through-human-review-and-clear-categorization-help-your-team-respond-without-being-overwhelmed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does having expert triage through human review and clear categorization help your team respond to emotional distress, self-harm, or violence signals without being overwhelmed?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Our panelists all agreed that human review is essential for both accuracy and staff sanity.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Fink explained,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cThere\u2019s so much data, so many alerts\u2026 It\u2019s very helpful to have [the human review team] so we&#8217;re not overwhelmed and constantly having to vet false positives, and the ones that require immediate attention are escalated to us.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Giardina shared his journey:<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cFor the first two years, I was managing it by myself\u2026 The amount of alerts per day is pretty high, and there\u2019s little way for me to keep up with that workload. Now, the false positives are minimal, and I\u2019ve built a lot of trust in the system.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-have-you-seen-overlap-in-your-district-between-students-dealing-with-emotional-distress-and-potential-aggression\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Have you seen overlap in your district between students dealing with emotional distress and potential aggression?<\/h3>\n\n<p>I was struck by how often our panelists see self-harm and violence signals in the same students.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Fink said,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cIf we get a violence alert or self-harm alert, a mental health professional checks in with the kid. There\u2019s a lot more going on there\u2026 It\u2019s always worth it.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Giardina told a moving story about a second grader:<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cHe was talking about wanting to kill himself\u2026 Early detection helped us do a deep dive and create a targeted intervention plan. He\u2019s now getting help.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>James Caldwell added,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cWhatever it is, harm to self, harm to others, we don\u2019t want either. It helps to get them to the right people, and these programs help do that.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-does-early-detection-help-your-team-act-before-things-escalate\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does early threat detection help your team act before things escalate?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Early intervention truly saves lives.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Giardina described,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cOnce we get the early detection, we do a deep dive on the student\u2026 That allows the school to create their threat assessment team and gear it specifically towards what that child is experiencing.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>James Caldwell put it simply:<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cThe longer you wait, the harder it is to help. Early intervention leads to better outcomes. Connectedness is the greatest protective factor we have.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-has-your-team-adapted-to-help-students-who-show-persistent-or-escalating-signals-over-time\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How has your team adapted to help students who show persistent or escalating signals over time?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Our panelists emphasized teamwork and recognizing patterns.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Michael Giardina said,<\/em><\/li>\n\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s made us want to collaborate more\u2014not just with curriculum, but with safety and security\u2026 Now, if the anime a child is watching turns to something darker, we can intervene sooner.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Fink explained,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cIf it\u2019s a high alert and a kid has looked up self-harm seven times, there\u2019s a pattern. Someone with mental health experience needs to address this thoroughly.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-are-you-using-seasonal-patterns-to-enhance-your-threat-assessment-process\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are you using seasonal patterns to enhance your threat assessment process?<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>James Caldwell highlighted,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cIt gets back to training. Make your staff aware of certain holidays or anniversaries that might be triggers for particular students.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Fink shared,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cIf we\u2019re getting an alert, whether it\u2019s at 2 a.m. or Friday night, we\u2019re trying to get in contact with someone near that kid immediately. We do the same thing during breaks and holidays.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-has-high-risk-content-showing-up-on-new-platforms-changed-what-you-pay-attention-to-or-allow\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Has high-risk content showing up on new student safety platforms changed what you pay attention to or allow?<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Giardina explained,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cAlerts have changed what applications we allow. For example, we blocked Padlet because of unfiltered harmful content, and we\u2019re working with Canva to restrict uploads. The alerts help us decide what apps to allow.\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-does-having-insight-into-online-behavior-and-peer-submitted-tips-help-you-act-sooner\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does having insight into online behavior and peer-submitted tips help you act sooner?<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>James Caldwell stressed,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cMost reports for bullying are not by the person who gets bullied, but by bystanders. Anything we can do to promote positive bystander behavior helps prevention and intervention.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Fink added,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cAnonymous reporting has helped us tremendously\u2014not just with violence but with drugs and more. It\u2019s the ease with which kids can let staff know something\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-has-alert-or-stopit-ever-helped-you-catch-something-no-adult-would-have-otherwise-seen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Has Alert or StopIt ever helped you catch something no adult would have otherwise seen?<\/h3>\n\n<p>This question brought out some of the most powerful stories.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Fink shared,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cYes, all the time. There are a lot of things that come in that we didn\u2019t have any idea about\u2026 Specifically with self-harm, it\u2019s kids that were not on the radar until we got the information.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Giardina told of a human trafficking incident averted,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cWe avoided a human trafficking incident because Alert caught a student corresponding with someone overseas\u2026 That\u2019s how we caught it, and the person was prosecuted.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>James Caldwell recalled,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cWe had a student fill out a StopIt report over a weekend. Our principal got it, contacted an SRO who knew the family, and we were able to intervene. Prevention works.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-one-insight-that-s-changed-the-way-your-district-approaches-safety-this-year\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is one insight that\u2019s changed the way your school district approaches safety this year?<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Fink closed with,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cA phone call, a meeting with a kid. We\u2019d rather do more than less. Every single time for a self-harm call, the family\u2019s appreciated it.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michael Giardina echoed,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cWe are so glad to have a way to be alerted before something happens. This year, our counselors are spending more time on these issues instead of just scheduling.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>James Caldwell noted a practical change,<\/li>\n\n<li><em>\u201cWe have a new law in Texas banning phones during the school day. That\u2019s changed how we promote StopIt, directing students to their Chromebooks instead.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-final-thoughts\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n<p>As we wrapped up, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this community and for the real, life-saving work happening every day. As James Caldwell put it so poignantly:<\/p>\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe majority of people don\u2019t hurt people\u2014the majority help people. Prevention works.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Thank you again, Michael, Michael, and James, for your honesty, your leadership, and your heart.
