All Saints C of E Primary School Keep Devices Safe with Relay

All Saints Primary School in Manchester wanted to find ways of integrating technology into their learning to best equip their students for the digital world of secondary school and beyond. Nigel Milligan is the IT Manager at the school and is responsible for researching and implementing these new technologies, as well as ensuring they are working correctly. “I look after all the devices in school, we have iPad and Mac,” Nigel tells us.

“We’re primarily cloud-based with most systems and the mobility of the iPad, in particular, has enabled everybody to seamlessly access information anytime and anywhere.”

Having seen the benefits of the cloud with most of his other systems, Nigel was keen to find a web filter with the same advantages. After already successfully using Lightspeed Systems cloud-based MDM, Relay Manage, for 3 years, the decision to go with Relay Filter was an easy one. “Going with Relay Filter as the final product was primarily down to the fact that we don’t require an onsite device and that we are already a Lightspeed MDM user,” he explains.

“All of our devices are enrolled, so to deploy the filtering agent was a simple case of pushing out the app and from then on, it was seamless.”

Another important feature Nigel was looking for from a filter was the ability to customise policies for entire year groups as well as individual users. With an age range of 3-11, he knew that different students would have different needs. “With regards to the age appropriate content, there are certain sites and resources which are appropriate for Key Stage 2 children, but still inappropriate for the early years,” he said.

“With Relay, we now have the flexibility to put those policies in place.”

The education-focused nature of Relay also means that the categories are much more granular, giving students access to more relevant content, without being over-blocked.

After being confident with their ability to filter devices, All Saints also needed to report on student’s activity, ensuring that they were using the Internet appropriately. Nigel soon discovered that Relay Filter had all the tools he needed to easily analyse the data on his network. “We found the internet dashboard report really helpful,” he proclaims.

“Straight away we can see the percentage of website categories that have been accessed and we are pleased to say that the biggest majority are educational.”

As well as a dashboard view of categories visited by all users, Relay’s reporting also lets schools view the activity of groups and individual users, set up scheduled reports and can even give parents an overview of their child’s activity.

While this granular reporting allows All Saints to view student’s behaviour reactively, the monitoring features give them real-time alerts of all online behaviour, allowing proactive analysis. These features include the flagged keywords list, which can be updated with local terms, and Safety Check, which automatically screenshots and sends any potential harmful searches to admins.

“The main feature with Relay that actually clinched the deal was the monitoring, which I know is an area that Ofsted are focusing on more.”

Nigel explains. “The flexibility of the system means we can give ownership of monitoring duty to our safeguarding lead and other people within the school, so it won’t just be down to me.”

On the rare occasion that they do encounter a problem with Relay or if they need any technical help with enrolment or setup, the Lightspeed Systems support team are always available to help at no extra cost. “It’s been an excellent experience, the support from Lightspeed is second to none,” Nigel declares.

“They’re very proactive and very passionate about their products and really take care to find out what we require. They also look at our future development with our devices and how the solutions can help move things forward, it’s been brilliant.”

Relay has given All Saints Primary School the granular filtering, monitoring and device management they needed and is the perfect platform to help them reach their goal of going 1:1. It’s also saved Nigel time and money with no upkeep on hardware and given him a single platform to transform his devices into powerful tools for learning. “One of my favourite catch phrases for this solution is that it’s a no brainer,” Nigel concludes,

“if you want to make things simple, seamless and flexible, Relay for everything it does with devices and your e-safety management is just a no brainer, you’ve just got to do it.”
