20 Things Teachers Can Do with Lightspeed Systems Classroom Management

It’s not enough for schools to buy devices for their students.

You also need to make sure students are using them properly to advance their learning. A classroom management app can help with that, allowing teachers to monitor student screens so they can spot students who are getting off-task or are struggling to keep up with their peers.

Lightspeed Classroom Management™ is a cloud-based classroom management solution that gives teachers unparalleled visibility into what’s going on with classroom activities. With Lightspeed Classroom Management, teachers don’t have to worry about being everywhere at once, peering at every student’s screen. Teachers also don’t have to be glued to their own screens, following their students’ page views trying to figure out who’s off-task.

That’s why Lightspeed Classroom Management is so revolutionary. Classroom Management uses smart analytics tools to zero in on unusual browsing activity, notifying teachers in real-time when students may be distracted or need help. Our classroom management solution frees teachers from their desks and devices so they can spend more time educating and less time managing.

If your district is looking to create engaging learning environments anywhere, whether in-person or at a distance, classroom management can help with that. Here are 20 things teachers can do with Lightspeed Classroom Management.

1. Get insights on unusual browsing behavior

How do teachers know which students aren’t focused? They receive an alert at the top of the screen indicating which students show unusual browsing behavior. Utilizing artificial intelligence, our classroom management app leverages years of data on students’ typical browsing behavior to understand when students’ online activity is abnormal.

2. Identify which students are most active online

Lightspeed Classroom Management solution identifies the students who’ve visited the most URLs during the class period, which may indicate a student who’s off-task.

3. See an aggregate view of the websites your students are browsing

Teachers can see what websites all their students are on right now. With Lightspeed Classroom Management, educators can open an aggregate view of web activity, allowing them to see a list of the URLs with favicons so they can quickly check everyone’s status.

4. View any student’s browsing history

Using Lightspeed Classroom Management, teachers can easily check students’ browsing history anytime during the class period to verify their browsing history is on task. Simply click a student’s name and select browsing history to see the student’s browsing activity for the entire class period. Teachers can also view every student’s open tabs.

5. See the top 3 sites students visit most often

Maybe teachers need to get a sense of where students are spending most of their time online. This can be done by looking under the Top Browsing in the left navigation, which shows running totals of how many students are on each domain.

6. Get student status updates

With Lightspeed Classroom Management, students can set their status to “working” or “done” or “need help.” This way, teachers will know when it’s safe to move on to the next task—and if students who are finished with their work are browsing unrelated URLs, teachers don’t have to wonder whether they’re distracted from the current assignment.

7. Sort students into lists based on their statuses

If teachers want to see what proportion of their class needs help or is done working, they can toggle to list view or change to a heat map view (shown below). Heat map view also uses color variance to quickly indicate the number of recent websites each student has viewed in class (light yellow means few websites and darker yellow means many websites), helping teachers identify students who may be off task.

8. Find out who needs help

Teachers know better than anyone that not all students who need help raise their hands and ask for it. In Lightspeed Classroom Management, students can set their status to “need help” to discreetly notify their teacher when they’re stuck.

9. See individual student screens in real time

If your teacher gets a notification that one of their students has unusual browsing activity, but the teacher wants to know for sure, your teacher can click on the student’s name to see what’s happening on the student device right that second.

10. Record any student’s device screen activity

If your teacher encounters a student who is continually getting off task, the teacher can record the student’s device screen, capturing that activity so they can provide examples to parents or administration to correct the student’s behavior. Note, with students’ privacy in mind, the ability to record students’ screens is limited to during the class session only.

11. Send instant messages to student device screens

Does a distracted student need a nudge to focus? Teachers can send a custom message or choose one from a list of predefined messages (e.g. “Are you done?” or “Need help?”) directly to the student. It will show up as a notification in the student’s browser. Students can then respond, “Yes,” “No,” or write a custom message.

12. Send links to students

Our classroom management lets teachers push links to their students—the whole class, a group, or just one student. Pushing a link opens a new tab on the student’s browser. This will help everyone get on the same page at the same time.

13. Lock student screens

Let’s say your teacher wants their students’ eyes upfront for a minute or needs a distracted student to stop what they’re doing immediately. With Lightspeed Classroom Management, teachers can lock any students’ screens for as long as necessary.

14. Set Web Rules to restrict student access to specific websites

Teachers may want their students to browse a specific site or group of sites during class time. With our classroom management app, teachers can use Web Rules to block or allow a specific site (or multiple websites), ensuring no one browses web content outside what teachers want them to access.

15. Release students from Web Rules when they’ve finished with their work

When students set their statuses to “done,” they’ll be released from any Web Rules their teachers have created. Then, they’ll be free to browse the web or work on other assignments.

16. Create student groups to ensure students are getting the content they need

Teachers can create student groups right from the main dashboard by clicking “Create Group” at the bottom. This is a great feature for group projects or if teachers identify students who need learning interventions and require more customized lessons. Teachers can also share their screens, lock student screens, and push URLs to only that group.

17. Customize content for each student group

Every student group has a Group Web Rules feature. Teachers can create custom lists of websites to block or allow based on each group’s needs without blocking everyone else.

18. Quickly see who’s checked into your class and who’s missing

Right from the teacher’s dashboard, teachers can see which students are “checked-in,” “not checked-in,” or “offline.” Attendance is aggregated by number of students fitting each category within the left navigation and an attendance status is displayed next to every student name, on every view whether in screen view, heat map, or list view.

19. Make sure students are in your class when they’re supposed to be

If a student should be in a classroom, but isn’t, a “not checked-in” identifier will appear by their name. This indicator appears if the student is both online and checked into another teacher’s class. Teachers can override the student’s attendance location and bring them into their own digital classroom by clicking on the student’s name and then, clicking the “check-in” button at the top of the student information.
