{"id":32761,"date":"2020-02-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-24T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/?post_type=news&#038;p=32761"},"modified":"2025-04-25T09:21:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T13:21:42","slug":"lex-rich-5-launches-new-app-promoting-student-safety-1","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/en_au\/news\/lex-rich-5-launches-new-app-promoting-student-safety-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Lex-Rich 5 Launches New App Promoting Student Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content\"><span data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\" id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\"><\/p>\n<section data-element_type=\"section\" data-id=\"be6221c\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-element_type=\"column\" data-id=\"245a2ff\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-element_type=\"widget\" data-id=\"e6c512a\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>COLUMBIA, S.C. \u2014 A new app in Lexington-Richland School District Five gives students another avenue to report information to administrators without giving their name.<\/p>\n<div data-responsive=\"true\" data-service=\"wltx\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe allowfullscreen=\"true\" height=\"360\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wltx.com\/embeds\/video\/responsive\/101-998b8fc2-d99e-4a50-9866-fb0c74944f7f\/iframe\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"640\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=14&amp;v=hpg-bli0xas&amp;feature=emb_logo\">STOPit<\/a>, and it launched this week in all middle, intermediate and high school campuses in the district.<\/p>\n<p>STOPit is another option students can use to reach out for help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to take something students and staff are very comfortable with, which is technology, and use that to further enhance our safety and our accessibility to administration in ways that they can reach out and ask for help so we can continue to maximize teaching and learning across the district,\u201d said Kelly Brown, Student Services Officer with Lex-Rich 5.<\/p>\n<p>Several schools in the district already had systems in place to report an incident anonymously, but the new app creates one district-wide system at no additional cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concerns could range from anything the student is experiencing,\u201d said Brown. \u201cThey may see suspicious activity or if there was a bullying incident or a threat, or any type of self-harm or mental health concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>STOPit sends reports anonymously. Students can access the app from anywhere using their smart phones or Chromebooks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They can upload pictures and videos from their device to the app to explain what\u2019s going on without having to step foot in an office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-element_type=\"widget\" data-id=\"d499363\" data-widget_type=\"button.default\">\n<div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/stopitsolutions.com\/request-info\/?utm_source=press&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=sc\" role=\"button\">\u00a0<\/a>\u201cWhen they report it, it immediately alerts administration,\u201d said Brown. \u201cSo we are able to intervene and respond and provide intervention, resources and support strategies to the student and the family.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section data-element_type=\"section\" data-id=\"23383e3\">\n<div data-element_type=\"column\" data-id=\"ab94f69\">\n<div data-element_type=\"widget\" data-id=\"69aed38\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div>\n<p>To get started, students use a special code for their school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re gonna see a huge jump in the reporting of things that students see,\u201d said Beth Thompson, who has children in middle school and high school in Lex-Rich 5.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson believes the STOPit app takes anonymity to a new level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though they have other avenues to report [issues] anonymously, there is still that fear of, \u2018Did they see me go in the office? Did this person see me talking to that administrator?&#8217;\u201d said Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting a concern can break trust in friendships at a critical age. But Thompson says this new app can help prevent that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis allows them a quick and easy way to report that without it ever having to come back on them personally,\u201d she said. \u201cWhether it be with a friend, or someone who might be bullying them or they witness it happening, or whether it be they\u2019re worried about the social or physical impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy child and my children\u2019s friends are less likely to slip through a crack. Like, \u2018I was gonna report it but I just didn\u2019t get time.\u2019 It\u2019s right there,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>District officials hope to launch the app in elementary schools within the next month.<\/p>\n<p>The app is for students and staff only.
