These two things have come together in tragic ways, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/en_au\/challenges\/student-safety-wellbeing\/ai-risks-and-safety-in-schools\/#news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent stories<\/a> about AI companions encouraging suicidal ideation in teens.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GenAI tools are marketed as assistants, copilots, mentors, and helpful \u201cfriends\u201d for students\u2014always available to answer questions, boost confidence, and even provide emotional support. In theory, that sounds positive. In practice, the risks are serious.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-risks-of-ai-companions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Risks of AI Companions\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike a teacher, counselor, or even a peer, AI companions don\u2019t know when to stop. They don\u2019t recognize warning signs. They don\u2019t flag troubling behavior. Instead, they respond on autopilot, with sycophantic tendencies that encourage when they should not. That can mean:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reinforcing harmful thoughts<\/strong> when a student is struggling with self-harm or suicidal ideation.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Giving inappropriate or unsafe advice<\/strong> without context or judgment.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Creating dependence on a \u201cfriend\u201d that isn\u2019t real, <\/strong>leaving students isolated from human support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Left unmonitored, these interactions are invisible to schools. A student could be spiraling, and no adult would ever know.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-monitoring-matters\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Monitoring AI in Schools Matters<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve seen this pattern before: every new technology brings opportunity and risk. YouTube gave students endless learning resources\u2014and endless distractions. Social media gave them connection\u2014and also cyberbullying and exposure to harm. Each time, schools adapted by layering in visibility and controls.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI in schools is simply the next frontier. The difference is, this one can talk back.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why monitoring AI isn\u2019t optional. Schools need to see how students are using AI tools, guide them toward AI safety and productive use, and intervene when activity signals risk. Without monitoring, districts are flying blind.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what I know about the use of AI in schools:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI can be powerful in very positive ways; it\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/26\/technology\/chatgpt-openai-suicide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prone to risk<\/a><\/li>\n\n<li>Guardrails added by AI tools are <a href=\"https:\/\/counterhate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Fake-Friend_CCDH_FINAL-public.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prone to circumvention<\/a> by students<\/li>\n\n<li>AI isn\u2019t going anywhere, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/en_au\/challenges\/student-safety-wellbeing\/ai-risks-and-safety-in-schools\/#help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">schools need to implement solutions<\/a> to keep it safe, managed, appropriate, reported, and transparent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-our-role\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Role\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Lightspeed, we\u2019ve spent more than 25 years helping schools walk this line: empowering innovation while keeping students safe.
