AI is already sitting next to our students \u2014 helping them write papers, solve math problems, generate art, and study for tests.<\/p>\n\n<p>But it\u2019s also doing something else.<\/p>\n\n<p>Students are asking AI questions they aren\u2019t asking adults.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>\u201cHow do I stop feeling hopeless?\u201d<br \/>\u201cWhat should I do if my friend wants to die?\u201d<br \/>\u201cHow can I stand up to a bully?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Those aren\u2019t academic prompts. <strong>They\u2019re emotional ones.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>For many students, AI has quietly become a trusted digital companion \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ai-digital-friendship-with-teens-common-sense-media-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sometimes even a stand-in for a teacher, counselor, or friend. <\/a>That\u2019s a profound shift, and it changes how we need to think about AI in K\u201312 education.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-conversation-we-re-not-having-about-ai-in-schools\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Conversation We\u2019re Not Having About AI in Schools<\/h2>\n\n<p>When I talk with district leaders about artificial intelligence, the first concerns are usually about cheating or plagiarism. And yes, academic integrity matters.<\/p>\n\n<p>But that\u2019s just the surface.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Research shows that:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a id=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/technology\/rising-use-of-ai-in-schools-comes-with-big-downsides-for-students\/2025\/10#:~:text=One%20of%20the%20negative%20consequences,%25)%2C%20according%20to%20the%20report.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/technology\/rising-use-of-ai-in-schools-comes-with-big-downsides-for-students\/2025\/10#:~:text=One%20of%20the%20negative%20consequences,%25)%2C%20according%20to%20the%20report.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" type=\"link\">Half of students who use AI<\/a> say it makes them feel less connected to their teachers.<\/li>\n\n<li><a id=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/news\/technology\/study-shows-students-using-ai-alarming-school-communities\/article_bce7fdc2-1a37-49d1-a32a-ee8f1fe2548e.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/news\/technology\/study-shows-students-using-ai-alarming-school-communities\/article_bce7fdc2-1a37-49d1-a32a-ee8f1fe2548e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" type=\"link\">More than half have seen<\/a> radical or extreme content.<\/li>\n\n<li><a id=\"https:\/\/cdt.org\/press\/cdt-survey-research-finds-use-of-ai-in-k-12-schools-connected-to-negative-effects-on-students-including-their-real-life-relationships\/#:~:text=New%20data%20shows%20that%20half,and%20CEO%2C%20Alexandra%20Reeve%20Givens.\" href=\"https:\/\/cdt.org\/press\/cdt-survey-research-finds-use-of-ai-in-k-12-schools-connected-to-negative-effects-on-students-including-their-real-life-relationships\/#:~:text=New%20data%20shows%20that%20half,and%20CEO%2C%20Alexandra%20Reeve%20Givens.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" type=\"link\">42% say they\u2019ve used AI chatbots<\/a> for emotional support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>AI isn\u2019t just reshaping how students learn. It\u2019s reshaping how they connect \u2014 <strong>and sometimes disconnect.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>And when AI guardrails fail, schools are the ones who feel the impact.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-blocking-ai-isn-t-the-solution\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blocking AI Isn\u2019t the Solution<\/h2>\n\n<p>When AI first surged into schools, the instinct was clear: block it. On the surface, that feels like the safest option.<\/p>\n\n<p>But AI isn\u2019t just one website anymore.<\/p>\n\n<p>It\u2019s embedded in browsers, productivity tools, search engines, and note-taking apps. Students don\u2019t need to visit a single \u201cAI site\u201d to be using AI.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the past year alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/en_au\/products\/lightspeed-alert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lightspeed Alert\u2122<\/a> has identified concerning content from<strong> more than 130 different AI-related domains<\/strong> \u2014 including conversational platforms like Character.AI, where students can engage in immersive, emotionally driven dialogue with AI personas.<\/p>\n\n<p>Even when districts believe they\u2019ve locked the door, AI finds another way in.<\/p>\n\n<p>Blocking may slow exposure, but it doesn\u2019t create visibility. And without visibility, schools don\u2019t truly understand how \u2014 or why \u2014 students are engaging with these tools.<\/p>\n\n<p>As our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/en_au\/news\/lightspeed-systems-appoints-dr-donal-mcmahon-as-chief-artificial-intelligence-officer-to-lead-next-gen-innovation-in-education-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Chief AI Officer, Donal McMahon<\/a>, often says:<br \/><strong>\u201cWhen schools lack visibility, they can\u2019t manage risk \u2014 they can only react to it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>That\u2019s the shift in front of us.<\/p>\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t about unrestricted access. A high school research class may use generative AI differently than an elementary classroom. Readiness matters.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Appropriate <\/strong>means teaching AI literacy. Students need to understand what AI is, where it gets information, and how to question its outputs. AI should enhance thinking \u2014 not replace it.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Reported <\/strong>means using data to see patterns, not just incidents. AI monitoring in schools shouldn\u2019t feel punitive. It should help educators spot trends and intervene early when students may be struggling.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Transparent <\/strong>means bringing families and staff into the conversation. Trust grows when communities understand what tools are being used and what safeguards are in place.<\/p>\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t about saying no to innovation.<\/p>\n\n<p>It\u2019s about saying yes \u2014 <strong>responsibly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-bigger-responsibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bigger Responsibility<\/h2>\n\n<p>AI is now a national priority in education. is ready to step in when something goes wrong?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>If we can answer those questions with clarity and confidence, we\u2019re not chasing the AI revolution \u2014 we\u2019re leading it.<\/p>\n\n<p>AI is already in our classrooms.<\/p>\n\n<p>Our job is to make sure it supports student learning, strengthens connection, and protects student safety \u2014 not the other way
