Oklahoma became one of the first states in the country to establish a comprehensive, enforceable framework for AI use in K\u201312 classrooms when Governor Kevin Stitt signed Senate Bill 1734 (the Oklahoma Responsible Technology in Schools Act<\/a>) on May 12, 2026. The law passed the Senate 42\u20130 and the House 89\u20130.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That unanimity matters.<\/strong> SB 1734 isn’t a controversial or partisan measure. It reflects a broad consensus among Oklahoma lawmakers that AI in classrooms needs clear boundaries, family transparency, and human accountability \u2014 before these tools become the default rather than the exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is Oklahoma SB 1734?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Oklahoma Responsible Technology in Schools Act, authored by Sen. Ally Seifried (R-Claremore), creates the first statewide legal framework for artificial intelligence in Oklahoma public schools and charter schools. At its core, the law:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Requires educator-directed AI use.<\/strong> AI tools used for instruction must be operated under direct educator oversight \u2014 not autonomously.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Prohibits AI as the primary decision-maker.<\/strong> AI cannot be the primary basis for grading, discipline, placement, or other high-stakes decisions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Mandates a written district AI policy<\/strong> adopted before the 2027\u201328 school year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Requires annual disclosure to families<\/strong> of every AI vendor in use and the student data each collects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Protects parental opt-out rights.<\/strong> Parents may opt their child out of student-facing AI tools without academic penalty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is also directed to develop implementation guidance for districts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
