However, before partnering with Lightspeed Systems, ISSD lacked the edtech Ethan Dancy, the district\u2019s Technology Support Manager, and his community needed to make the most of their 1:1 initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Dancy and his team relied on Zscaler\u2122 for its filtering needs, but it\u2019s hard to say whether administrators, teachers, or students found it more frustrating. Zscaler, he says was a blunt instrument that made it impossible to have the granular control he wanted over the community\u2019s filtering. <strong>\u201cWe had to call someone to make changes to our filtering rules,\u201d<\/strong> Mr. Dancy said, <strong>\u201cbut even after we called it was all or nothing with Zscaler.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Further, the district didn\u2019t just need to control what content students were accessing, but when. <strong>\u201cWe were using the Dyknow\u00ae classroom management software, but students were getting off task in class and cheating was out of control,\u201d<\/strong> Mr. Dancy explained. <strong>\u201cWe had to find a way to manage kids in the classroom and make sure students were actually engaged and learning.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"component component__quote\"><p>\n<span class=\"component__quote__content\"><\/p>\n<p>When we saw how granular we could be with Lightspeed Filter\u2122, we knew it was the right fit for us.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<footer class=\"component__quote__source\">\n<cite><br \/>\n<span class=\"component__quote__source__author\">Ethan Dancy<\/span><span class=\"component__quote__source__title\">Technology Support Manager<\/span>, <span class=\"component__quote__source__org\">Iredell-Statesville School District <\/span><br \/>\n<\/cite><br \/>\n<\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"component component__title\">\n<span class=\"component__title__copy\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"component__title__title\"><br \/>\nSolution: Granular Control Over Accessible Content and Visibility Into Student Devices<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p>The first step towards a more effective edtech environment came when Mr. Dancy signed up for a demo with Lightspeed Systems. <strong>\u201cWhen we saw how granular we could be with Lightspeed Filter,\u201d<\/strong> he said, <strong>\u201cwe knew it was the right fit for us.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to granular control over what the ISSD community can access, Lightspeed Filter empowers Mr. Dancy to protect his students from malicious content within sites, such as YouTube. Thanks to Lightspeed\u2019s SmartPlay\u2122 technology, he and his team can make available to students the educational and age-appropriate videos that help them learn while still denying them access to obscene or dangerous content.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Dancy also chose to deploy Lightspeed Classroom Management\u2122 throughout the ISSD schools. That makes a big difference.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The result, Mr. Dancy says, is an emerging change in the student culture. <strong>\u201cSome of the bad behavior has slowed down,\u201d<\/strong> he concluded. <strong>\u201cStudents know that we can tell if they\u2019re trying to use their computers for stuff they shouldn\u2019t do, so why try now?
