A state of emergency<\/p>\n

A state of emergency in children\u2019s mental health was recently declared<\/a> by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Children\u2019s Hospital Association.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs health professionals dedicated to the care of children and adolescents,\u201d the declaration states, \u201cwe have witnessed soaring rates of mental health challenges among children, adolescents, and their families over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, exacerbating the situation that existed prior to the pandemic.\u202fChildren and families across our country have experienced enormous adversity and disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concerning K-12 mental health trends<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Lightspeed has also conducted research on the impacts to student mental health, and we\u2019re also seeing concerning trends. This video discusses what we\u2019ve observed nationally and what parents are saying and are worried about.<\/p>\n

In addition, a recent study conducted by the CDC<\/a> found that during 2020, the proportion of mental health-related emergency department visits among adolescents aged 12\u201317 years increased 31% compared with that during 2019. And, sadly, more than 3,000 teenagers in the US attempt suicide every day.<\/a><\/p>\n

Student suicide prevention monitoring<\/p>\n

The numbers are startling. To bring this topic to the forefront, Lightspeed held a webinar with a panel of experts<\/a> to have an open dialogue about the signs of student depression, mental health issues K-12 students face, and how to improve mental health in schools.<\/p>\n

Amy Grosso is the Board Chair for the Central Texas Chapter of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Director of Behavioral Health Services at Round Rock ISD, a district in Texas that has about 48,000 students. Given her expertise, we asked her to share some thoughts on how to support students who may be suffering from mental health issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cMental health issues and suicide prevention is\u202factually about\u202fearly intervention and early alerts,\u201d Amy said. \u201cNoticing signs and symptoms before a crisis\u202fpoint so that counseling can be\u202fgiven,\u202fand\u202fsupport\u202fcan be given to that student and to that family.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the largest obstacles educators and families face is how to detect signs of student depression and concerning behavior so early intervention can occur and students who need help don\u2019t slip through the cracks. During the webinar, Nicole Allien, the instructional technologist at Caddo\u202fParish\u202fPublic\u202fSchools, shared, \u201cWithin the first two weeks of using Lightspeed Alert\u2122<\/a>, we had 38 notifications of concerning online behavior and 16 of them resulted in an alert from your human review specialists<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicole continued, \u201cJust last week, I got an Alert. The student had searched, \u2018what to do if you\u2019re having suicidal thoughts?\u2019 I picked up the phone to call the school and was able to connect with the principal. The student had just been released from a mental health facility, and the alert allowed us to get him the help he still needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicole\u2019s district uses Lightspeed Alert to help prevent on-site school violence and to identify students who may be at risk of self-harm, suicide, cyberbullying, and mental health issues. It\u2019s a key component of their student suicide prevention monitoring strategy.<\/p>\n

Ariana Marks, a Lightspeed Safety Specialist<\/a>, has worked closely with Nicole and Caddo\u202fParish\u202fPublic\u202fSchools and has been involved in some of the alerts that have saved student lives. We asked her about her experience and the kind of alerts she\u2019s seen thus far.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most common alert I see is\u202ffor\u202fself-harm\u202fin the middle-school and high-school age group,\u201d Ariana said.\u202f\u201cI\u2019m\u202fseeing a lot of kids\u202ftalk about suicide or looking up ways to commit suicide.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was one self-harm alert that I had to\u202fescalate to an imminent threat.\u202fA student was looking up the suicide\u202fprevention\u202fhotline and researching\u202fresources\u202ffor help.\u202fThat was\u202fthe\u202ftrigger for me\u2014I needed\u202fto call somebody because they\u202fwere thinking about\u202fit\u202fright\u202fat that moment.\u202fI deemed\u202fit\u202fan\u202fimminent threat\u202fand escalated it to the district safety personnel.\u202fAfter I escalate a concern, I often can\u2019t sleep until the district contacts me and lets me know the student is okay. They don\u2019t have to, but I really appreciate it. Knowing that I caught something and helped a district prevent and intervene in a potential suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n
