This shows students are facing more serious challenges and need accessible ways to get help during the school day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-270e6a11bd2ffa19df461e3b0a38bace\" style=\"color:#00afd7\"><strong>Anonymous Reporting Is a Game-Changer: <\/strong>A striking 80% of students wouldn\u2019t have reported their concerns without an anonymous program, and 74% of those who do harm (to themselves or others) confide in a friend first. Providing safe, anonymous tools is critical to catching issues early and empowering students to look out for themselves and each other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background\" style=\"background-color:#00afd7;color:#00afd7\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good afternoon, Lightspeed community! I\u2019m Kevin Askew, VP of Sales here at Lightspeed Systems, and I\u2019m excited to welcome you to another episode of Lightning Chat. Today, I was joined by the insightful Erika Johnson, Strategic Account Manager and a veteran building leader with 25 years of experience in Wisconsin schools. Together, we tackled a topic that\u2019s rapidly reshaping the landscape of school safety: how student reporting is evolving as cell phone-free schools take hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cell-phone-free-schools-a-cultural-shift\">Cell Phone-Free Schools: A Cultural Shift<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past two years, our data tells a clear story: <strong>75% of student reports through our platform are submitted during the school day<\/strong> (between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m). This shows that when students are present in a safe, structured environment, they\u2019re more willing to share concerns. But as more school districts embrace cell phone-free policies, we\u2019re seeing a significant shift in how students report. The reliance on mobile apps is dropping, and it\u2019s never been more important to provide alternative pathways for students to reach out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-meeting-students-where-they-are\">Meeting Students Where They Are<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Lightspeed, we\u2019re not standing still. We\u2019ve expanded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/en_uk\/products\/lightspeed-stopit\/\">Lightspeed StopIt\u2122<\/a> platform to offer multiple reporting options beyond the mobile app: web interfaces, Chromebook and iPad apps, and more. Erika drove home a crucial point: as school cell phone policies change, equity and accessibility must stay at the forefront. Every student deserves a voice, regardless of their device or social circumstances. In fact, our one-to-one device options are making sure that no one is silenced by policy changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-data-behind-the-shift-in-student-reporting\">The Data Behind the Shift in Student Reporting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s look at the numbers from our StopIt data. Over the last couple of years, we\u2019ve seen a <strong>20% shift away from mobile app reporting<\/strong> <strong>to other methods.<\/strong> In states that were early adopters of cell phone-free education, the drop is even more dramatic: <strong>mobile app usage fell from 51% in the 2022-23 school year to 36% in 2024-25.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s not just how students are reporting, it\u2019s what they\u2019re reporting. <strong>Engagement with reporting as a percentage of overall program use dropped from 87% to 56%. Meanwhile, crisis support engagement soared by 450%<\/strong> (from 8% to 37%), and self-help resource engagement continues to rise. To me, that says kids want help, want to report, and want resources\u2014they just need the right tools to do it their way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-emergent-needs-and-the-power-of-anonymous-reporting\">Emergent Needs and the Power of Anonymous Reporting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a stat that stopped me in my tracks: even though overall reporting engagement dropped, we saw <strong>a<\/strong> <strong>15% increase in life-threatening and imminent threat reports.<\/strong> The issues students are sharing are more urgent than ever\u2014a clear indicator that the challenges they face are growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erika reminded us that these numbers aren\u2019t abstract; <strong>they\u2019re the heartbeat of what students are telling us.<\/strong> School safety isn\u2019t built in the midst of a crisis. It\u2019s built on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/en_uk\/blog\/a-guide-for-creating-a-safe-and-supportive-k-12-classroom-environment\/\">everyday trust and on making sure every student knows their voice matters<\/a>. Anonymous reporting tools like StopIt close that gap, turning silent struggles into opportunities for meaningful intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-multiple-pathways-matter\">Why Multiple Pathways Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It all comes back to this: student needs are evolving, and so must our solutions. Policy changes like cell phone bans are changing how students communicate, but by offering device-friendly access and robust support resources, we\u2019re meeting students on their terms and empowering them to speak up when it matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we wrapped up, I shared <a href=\"https:\/\/pwp.lightspeedsystems.com\/2025_State_Student_Safety?_gl=1*dq49cd*_gcl_au*MjAzMzg5Mjc2NS4xNzU3NjA2NDM0*_ga*MTc2MDYzMzAwMS4xNzU3NjA2NDM1*_ga_NKKH7JKEXB*czE3NTg2NDMwOTckbzMwJGcxJHQxNzU4NjQzODkwJGo2MCRsMCRoMA..\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one last data point<\/a> that drives it all home: <strong>80% of students who report through an anonymous program say they wouldn\u2019t have done so without that anonymity. <\/strong>And <strong>74% of those who do harm, whether to themselves or others, tell a friend before acting.<\/strong> That\u2019s why providing a safe, anonymous way for students to come forward is vital; not just for their own well-being, but for the safety of the whole school community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-thoughts\">Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Erika said so well, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightspeedsystems.com\/en_uk\/blog\/from-reactive-to-proactive-how-actionable-intelligence-transforms-k-12-school-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the gap between knowing and acting can be dangerous.<\/a> If we don\u2019t hear students\u2019 stories until a crisis erupts, we\u2019ve missed the chance to step in early. Let\u2019s keep normalizing asking for help. Let\u2019s build school cultures where seeking support is seen as strong and responsible.
