Lightspeed\u2019s response to AP\u2019s coverage of school safety tech<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We appreciate the Associated Press for shining a light on the rising use of safety monitoring technology in schools. These are complex, emotional topics and they deserve open, honest discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Lightspeed, we believe student safety and student privacy are not at odds. In fact, both must be protected with equal vigilance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Lightspeed Alert Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lightspeed Alert is not a mass surveillance tool. It\u2019s a student safety solution built only for school-managed devices and accounts. We do not monitor personal devices, nor do we monitor everything a student does. And it\u2019s not just keywords but the context that our AI looks at, ensuring that we minimize false alerts and unnecessary interactions. Lightspeed Alert’s AI flags activity tied to specific safety signals like searches, documents, messages, or posts related to harm, weapons, abuse, or suicide risk. That’s it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School districts choose how they want to handle alerts. Some have their own staff (counselors, safety officers, mental health leads) review alerts directly. Others rely on Lightspeed\u2019s Human Review team, which includes professionals with backgrounds in school safety, mental health, and law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From January through July 2025<\/strong>, our Human Review team evaluated over 582,000 incidents<\/strong>, flagging 51,000 as high-risk<\/strong>, and 2,555 as imminent<\/strong>. Only 0.09%, fewer than 1 in 1,000<\/strong>, resulted in Lightspeed contacting law enforcement directly, and only after multiple failed attempts to reach the district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words: we don\u2019t jump to law enforcement<\/strong>. We support school teams in preventing escalation and intervening with care, not punishment. Why This Work Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s students are growing up in a pressure cooker. According to the CDC<\/a>, 42% of high school students<\/strong> feel persistently sad or hopeless. 22%<\/strong> have seriously considered suicide. Yet many of those students never speak up\u2014especially those at highest risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this environment, schools are being asked to do more with less. Teachers aren\u2019t mental health professionals. Counselors are stretched thin. And safety teams can\u2019t be everywhere at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology, used responsibly, can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s an important distinction that often gets lost in conversations about student safety monitoring: a false positive isn\u2019t the same as a joke, a passing comment, or a situation that doesn\u2019t lead to discipline.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people talk about \u201cfalse positives,\u201d they often mean alerts that didn\u2019t turn out to be a real threat. But that doesn\u2019t mean they weren\u2019t worth flagging and reviewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes a student is joking about violence or self-harm. Sometimes they\u2019re referencing a song lyric, venting frustration, or using language that raises concern but isn\u2019t necessarily dangerous. That\u2019s not a system failure. That\u2019s a system doing its job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
