They’re using it at home, on their phones, and increasingly within schoolwork. They’re turning to generative AI tools for homework support, advice, and in some cases, even companionship. Whether schools formally allow AI tools on their networks or not, AI is already embedded in students’ digital lives.

The real challenge for schools isn’t stopping AI. It’s managing it.

When I speak with school leaders, two concerns consistently rise to the top:

Appropriate: ensuring AI use promotes learning, digital citizenship, and academic integrity. Reported: Monitoring and surfacing AI activity for oversight and accountability. Transparent: Communicating AI use, policies, and protections openly with families and staff.
