screen time parent portal screen time report on a laptop in a living room

Screen time is one of the most charged conversations in K-12 right now. It shows up at board meetings, in parent surveys, in legislation, and in the news. Districts are being asked to take positions, share data, and demonstrate that they understand what’s happening on student devices — even as the pressure comes from every direction at once.

The problem is that most districts haven’t had a practical way to respond. They have the data internally, but sharing it with parents has meant manual reports, newsletter blurbs, or just not answering at all.

Starting July 15, there’s a better option.

The Screen Time Pressure Is Real — and Growing

The conversation around student screen time has shifted significantly in recent years. Lightspeed’s own research helps put the picture in context:

  • 73% of parents have concerns about what their child is doing online and how much time they spend on screens.
  • Yet the average school-day screen time across student populations is just 48 minutes — far lower than most parents assume.
  • The majority of that time is spent in instructional and productivity tools, not social media or entertainment. Curriculum and instructional applications account for roughly 21% of usage; productivity tools like Google and Microsoft around 15%; reading and literacy tools around 7%.
  • As of March 2026, 58% of education systems worldwide have enacted national phone bans in schools, according to the UNESCO GEM Report phone ban tracker — more than in any previous two-year period.

The issue isn’t that the data is alarming. The issue is that parents don’t have access to it. And when they don’t have information, they fill the gap with assumptions — which are almost always worse than the reality.

Introducing Screen Time in Parent Portal

Starting July 15, Lightspeed Filter customers with Lightspeed Insight and SmartSync can give parents a direct window into their child’s daily device use — right inside the Parent Portal their district already controls.

When a district enables Screen Time in Parent Portal, parents can access five data cards — each one independently toggleable, so IT admins control exactly what’s visible:

  • Daily Average: Average screen time per active school day. Absences are excluded from the calculation so they don’t skew the number.
  • Total Screen Time: Cumulative device time over the last 7 days.
  • Most Used Apps: Top apps ranked by average daily screen time.
  • Activity Per Day: A day-by-day chart of total screen time over the last 7 days.
  • In School vs. Out of School: A breakdown of screen time by monitoring window.

Parents can also access a “How is this calculated?” explanation directly on the page — giving families the context they need to understand and trust what they’re seeing.

Districts Stay in Control

Screen Time in Parent Portal is off by default. There’s no change to the parent experience until an IT admin explicitly turns it on from Filter Settings → Parent Portal. Districts that aren’t ready don’t have to act. For those facing pressure from parents or boards, it’s a single toggle.

Each data card is independently toggleable, which means districts don’t have to show everything or nothing. They can surface what makes sense for their community and hold back what doesn’t. The data doesn’t define district policy — it supports it.

Why This Matters Now

The screen time conversation isn’t going away. If anything, the legislative momentum, phone bans, and parent expectations suggest it’s going to intensify. Districts that can respond with real data — not just a policy statement — are in a fundamentally better position.

Lightspeed Insight already gives administrators this visibility across their district. Screen Time in Parent Portal extends it to the families who’ve been asking for it. The data is already there. This just puts it in the right hands.

How to Get Started

Screen Time in Parent Portal is available now to all customers with active Lightspeed Filter and Lightspeed Insight licenses and SmartSync configured, at no additional cost. To enable it, go to Filter Settings → Parent Portal in your admin console.
