For many students, AI has quietly become a trusted digital companion — sometimes even a stand-in for a teacher, counselor, or friend. That’s a profound shift, and it changes how we need to think about AI in K–12 education.
The Conversation We’re Not Having About AI in Schools
When I talk with district leaders about artificial intelligence, the first concerns are usually about cheating or plagiarism. And yes, academic integrity matters.
But that’s just the surface.
Research shows that:
- Half of students who use AI say it makes them feel less connected to their teachers.
- More than half have seen radical or extreme content.
- 42% say they’ve used AI chatbots for emotional support.
AI isn’t just reshaping how students learn. It’s reshaping how they connect — and sometimes disconnect.
And when AI guardrails fail, schools are the ones who feel the impact.
Blocking AI Isn’t the Solution
When AI first surged into schools, the instinct was clear: block it. On the surface, that feels like the safest option.
But AI isn’t just one website anymore.
It’s embedded in browsers, productivity tools, search engines, and note-taking apps. Students don’t need to visit a single “AI site” to be using AI.

Even when districts believe they’ve locked the door, AI finds another way in.
Blocking may slow exposure, but it doesn’t create visibility. And without visibility, schools don’t truly understand how — or why — students are engaging with these tools.

“When schools lack visibility, they can’t manage risk — they can only react to it.”
That’s the shift in front of us.

A More Responsible Way to Approach AI in K–12

This isn’t about saying no to innovation.
It’s about saying yes — responsibly.
The Bigger Responsibility
AI is now a national priority in education. It’s part of students’ academic futures and their career readiness.
But it’s also part of their emotional lives.
And that’s the part we can’t ignore.
We have to ask ourselves:
- What is AI doing for our students?
- What is it doing to them?
- And who is ready to step in when something goes wrong?
If we can answer those questions with clarity and confidence, we’re not chasing the AI revolution — we’re leading it.

Our job is to make sure it supports student learning, strengthens connection, and protects student safety — not the other way around.
