Lightspeed Systems COPPA Notice

Notice: Collection, Use, and Disclosure of Your Child’s Personal Information

Lightspeed Systems complies with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, otherwise known as “COPPA.”

This notice describes our practices concerning the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information from children under the age of 13. Our limited use of this information is described here and in detail in the Lightspeed Systems Privacy Policy and Terms of Use that describes our commitment to your School/School District.

1. Consent

Your School/School District has consented to our collection of this information so that we can deliver the Lightspeed Systems service to your child and to the school. COPPA allows for educational institutions to act as a parent’s agent in certain educational contexts. This is outlined in the Federal Trade Commission’s document titled “Complying with COPPA: Frequently Asked Questions” (covered in Section M on “COPPA and Schools”).


2. Information We Collect

Information is provided to us by the School District, Lightspeed Systems does not collect information directly from students. We collect the following information about your child directly from the School/School District:

  • Unique SIS User ID

  • Username

  • First Name

  • Last Name

  • School

  • School or District Office Billing Zip Code

  • Grade Level, Class, or Group (optional)

  • E-mail Address (optional)

  • User Type (student or staff)


3. Use of Information We Collect

We use your child’s personal information as provided by the School District, to provide the services requested by the School District as per the contractual agreement in place and as stated in our Privacy Policy:

Student Data: Lightspeed Systems may have access to personally identifiable information about students (“Student Data”) in the course of providing Service(s) to a School. We recognize Student Data is confidential and do not use such data for any purpose other than to provide the Service(s) on the School’s behalf. Lightspeed Systems receives Student Data

only from the School and never interacts with the Student directly. The School confirms that it has obtained appropriate parental consent, as needed before the student is permitted to access the Service(s). Lightspeed Systems has access to Student Data only as requested by the School and only for the purposes of performing Services on the School’s behalf.

We use this information to operate, maintain, and provide the features and functionality of the Service. Including customer service, support, and billing; to analyze our Service offerings and functionality; to communicate with our Schools and website visitors; to exchange information, and to offer related services such as user group membership and event registration.


4. Who we Disclose Information to

Personal information is only shared in a few limited circumstances as described below. Lightspeed Systems will not give, sell, rent, loan, or otherwise disclose to any third parties outside of Lightspeed Systems and its agents, except when we have your permission or as required:

  • With those that provide us with technology services (e.g. web hosting and analytics services), but only with entities with comparably strict privacy policies and strictly for the purpose of carrying out their work for us.

  • Under special circumstances, such as when we believe in good faith that disclosure is reasonably necessary to (i) comply with a lawful request by public authorities, including to meet national security or law enforcement requirements, (ii) enforce the Terms of Use, (iii) respond to claims that any content provided by using the Services violates the rights of third parties, or (iv) protect the rights, property, or personal safety of Lightspeed Systems, its users, or the public


5. Verifying Consent

Because our consent comes directly from the School/School District, our contract for services with the School/School District
includes consent.
